Undiscovered Beaches of Karnataka – Beyond Gokarna

Whenever you think of beaches in Karnataka, Gokarna is the name that grabs all the attention. What about those who like walking the less-trodden road? Well, there coastline beyond Gokarna that holds some of the most enchanting and unexplored beaches. On our recent drive along the Konkan coast, we took the less beaten path and discovered the untouched shores, deserted sands, and warm, golden solitude of the less known beaches.

Our Off the Map Coastal Adventure

Without putting a timeline, we began our journey from Gokarna and set off mapping the coast southwards. The drive led us through languid fishing towns, twisting seaside roads, and skinny tracks that opened onto beaches so still that we could distinguish the beat of our hearts against the water.

Things to Do – Other Than Sand and Surf

1. Belekan Beach

Located within a few kilometres short of Gokarna, this beach is missed by the majority of the tourists. Trekking from Paradise Beach to Belekan covers some of the stunning cliff top views. We spent the night camping here amidst the stars.

While clean dorms around Hampankatta is ideal for comfort seekers on a budget, The Ocean Pearl is a for a value-for-money stay with excellent local food.

2. Aghanashini Beach

A short drive from Kumta got us to Aghanashini, where the sea and river meet. This serene is almost dreamlike location, and has boat tours across the mangroves and has picturesque spots to observe the sun dipping into the horizon.

3. Baada Beach

Nested between Honnavar and Kumta, this beach is among the cleanest and the most peaceful. No shacks, no hordes of people; just pristine waters, silky sand, and stark rock formations. We spent hours walking along the beach, scouring for seashells, undisturbed.

4. Kasarkod Eco Beach

A little more organized yet serene is the Kasarkod beach off Honnavar, which is environment friendly. It has clean walkways and lesser crowd. This makes it ideal for families or anyone seeking a safe, clean beach to unwind, without commercial tourism.

5. Tadadi Port and Beach

This working dock and nearby beach provided us with an experience of local coastal living, where fishermen bring in nets, bustling seafood markets came to life, and a created a country charm that’s impossible to recapture.

Summing Up Our Experience

Our journey beyond Gokarna revealed a coastline that felt like a well-kept secret of wild, beautiful, and refreshing serenity. While you plan to disconnect from the chaos and reconnect with nature, here’s what you can keep in mind:

  • Best Time to Visit: October to March
  • Rent a Scooter or Car: The preferred way to explore these beaches is by road. Having a vehicle of your choice allows you to stop where you want.
  • Pack Smart: Sunscreen, hat, swimwear, water bottles, and snacks are a must. Don’t rely on beachside cafes or shops at every stop.
  • Stay Local: Go for small local homestays or locally owned small eco-resorts. They’re cheap and provide you with a taste of local life and cuisine as well.
  • Be Respectful and Responsible: As these are virgin beaches, always pick your garbage, don’t play loud music, and let nature persist.
