Shri Krishna Mutt Udupi

2-Day Itinerary for Udupi and Malpe Beach – Temples, Coastlines and Sunset Magic

Udupi

At times, all one needs is a weekend at the coast, a combination of spirituality and sea breeze, and yummy food to recharge the soul. My recent 2-day visit to Udupi and Malpe Beach provided just that. A mix of rich temple culture, peaceful beaches, and a relaxed coastal atmosphere, this trip had the ideal rhythm for a quick break.

Here’s how you can make the most of 48 hours when in Udupi and Malpe, like I did.

Day 1: Exploring Udupi's Spiritual and Cultural Core

1. Morning Visit to Sri Krishna Matha and Temple Town:

We started early and arrived in Udupi by mid-morning. The first place we visited was the Sri Krishna Matha, which is one of the most sacred temples in South India. The temple complex beams with character, as old wooden passages, peaceful ponds, and distinctive Kanakana Kindi (window) make this sacred place one of a kind.

2. Afternoon Lunch like a Local:

While in Udupi, dining in a traditional restaurant is a must. We went to Woodlands or MTR, where a traditional Udupi thali was served on a banana leaf. This included sambar, rasam, kosambari, payasam, and the softest idlis I've ever had. It was a culinary experience that delighted all the senses.

3. An Evening of Local Shopping and Strolls:

In the evening, we strolled through Car Street, the shopping street. Handicraft brass lamp ornaments to temple trinkets and spicy perfumes, it's an excellent place to buy small souvenirs.

Day 2: Sun, Sand and Serenity at the Malpe Beach

1. Morning at the Malpe Beach and St. Mary's Island:

Following a leisurely breakfast, we motored some 6 km to Malpe Beach, an exquisite, pristine expanse of golden beach. We took a ferry to St. Mary's Island, it was great to walk bare feet on a beach of turquoise water, lined with coconut trees and volcanic rocks.

2. An Afternoon of Water Sports and Coastal Bites:

Back at Malpe Beach, we simply could not resist taking a few water sports like banana rides, jet skiing, and parasailing. It's safe, enjoyable, and great for families and friends. We had a coastal beachside lunch, indulging in fried fish, prawn sukka, neer dosa, and fresh coconut water.

2. An Evening of Excitement in the Sunset Cruise:

The highlight of the day was the Malpe Sunset Cruise. We sat with soft music playing, some snacks in hand, and a refreshing sea breeze all around, watching the sun dissolve into the Arabian Sea, spreading gold on the water.
